Music filled weekend

One thing that is for sure is that Luca loves music. He has been having a bit of a tough time these days with a broken finger, new molars and lots of traveling. All of those things fade away when you get him in front of a band. We had a adult night out on Saturday which was a blast and met some friends that are visiting from Germany. We invited them to meet us at Cold Spring tavern for some Sunday afternoon Music and BBQ. What a great display of some real rustic American Culture. Pretty Cool. Luca has been learning the harmonica at yellow bird music. People were so stoked to seem playing along with the band and dancing. So cute... well until he found the lead singers stash of real harmonicas which then turned in to a meltdown.

Luca's vocabulary is totally switched on now. It seems like he is learning a few words a day. So amazing and on our walk the other morning he figured breeto for the breakfast burrito I had stashed in the stroller.

Mexico Cruise Pt 3 Puerto Vallarta

Puerto Vallarta and the trip home went all to quick. Lara keeps reminding me that we should live on a boat.

Mexico Cruise Pt 2 Mazatlan

We took a trolley tour through Mazatlan. Luca missed his nap and screamed on trolley until falling asleep in a sweaty heap. We finished up with a nice lunch before returning to the dock.

Mexico Cruise Pt 1

Here are some photos from the cruise we just took to the Mexican Rivera on the Norwegian Sun. We had a great time being with family and enjoying some party time. Our boat left Los Angeles late in the afternoon and motored for a day and half to Cabo San Lucas. Being on board was really fun. We Danced saw shows and ate like kings. My marathon training was done in circles around the 1/4 mile jogging track. Lara spent her mornings in the health club as the sun rose.

Cabo San Lucas was busy as usual. Lara stayed aboard with Luca so he would not miss his nap. I went ashore and had a nice tour around Cabo falso and lunch with Angie, Dave, Makenna & Eve. The nice part of this visit to Cabo was we travelled everywhere by boat and missed the more rustic parts of cabo. The bay is so beautiful there. As the sun set behind the town our boat pulled the anchor up and set sail for Mazatlan.

The Music Industry verses Reality

There is another trial going on in Stockholm over the illegal trading of music files over a file sharing network. I love watching the Music industry fight these battles without realizing the real reason for there revenue declines.

If we look 5-10 years back our buying habits were something like:

  • Hear a song that you like. Buy Cd of 12 songs for the one song that you like. $15 dollars
  • Now we just buy the song or two that we like from Itunes or Amazon $1.98. I feel so bad for the record labels… After all those golden years of getting ripped off by a closed controlled system of commerce.

Today Lara and I constantly listen to the internet radio stations that are available in Itunes. Over the course of the 12 months jointly we have bought maybe 12-15 songs and no cd’s.

Many large scale artists are also selling straight to the public via Amazon or Itunes while retaining a better margin of the sale. After a band has a name and is popular the music labels are not needed. A record label can help a small band market itself on a grand scale but at a great cost to the artist. Jack Johnson made the decision to create his own label rather than signing with one of the big ones. He is now retaining his profits and is really much better off.

The old music business model has been super-ceded by technology. No amount of litigation is going to change this fact. Look at the other archaic businesses that are gone. One that comes to mind is the long distance telephone company. We used to have to pay for every long distance call and if that call was a cross a border the rates were very high. Now you can use a calling card or a service like skype to call anywhere in the world for a few cents a minute. Do you see the old providers suing Skype or trying to shut down the internet?
